Where Are the Book Clubs for Dudes?
So, I read a lot. But I’m also pretty set on the things I read. I read history, fantasy, a bit of science fiction, and lately, some HaremLit for some odd reason. So, I’ve been looking for ways of broadening my horizons a bit. I also want to be a little more social.
Therefore, I went on the hunt for an online book club or two. There are tons of ways to do this, but I found both Fable (a mobile first app) and bookclubs.com, a site that does what it says on the tin.
What I didn’t expect to find was the lack of fellow dudes. The vast majority of clubs are dominated by women. And while I did join one such club, I don’t really feel comfortable there. It’s not really the books they choose, but the conversations they have about them. Turns out, men and women really are different species. I don’t need to know some of the things these women talk about. For fuck’s sake.
So, I set out trying to find at least one group that was geared towards my own gender. A little balance, I figured, would be good. I’d have both perspectives, and it would lead to exposure to more types of literature. But goodness, there aren’t many. I fund a few on Fable, but most had been abandoned years ago, and those that were still running were member limited. Bookclubs.org was similar in that there just weren’t that many that felt like they were safe for guys.
I’ve thought about making my own, but there has to be a reason why this type of group doesn’t exist. Are book clubs not manly enough? Do men just not discuss the books they read?
I don’t know the answers to those questions. I know I would love to get together with a group of guys (or a more mixed group than 70 women and me) to discuss a new book each month. Maybe I’m the weirdo here. Maybe that’s not something men are supposed to be interested in.
So, who wants to start a book club with me? I promise I’ll leave the weird shit to my personal TBR.
