The Eternal Cable Conundrum
Tech nerds have too many cables. If you’re like me, you have boxes and totes and drawers full of every type of cable and cord imaginable. And my stuff is toned down from where it used to be because I threw out a lot of stuff during my last spring-clean.
But I still have so many cables, it’s insane. The real issue here is, I can never find the cables I need in the mess, so I end up buying new cables. That cycle repeats over and over again, and the problem keeps getting worse.
Any attempt to actually organize things is futile, since I have so many. I’ve tried in the past to roll everything up with ties and put them in sorted drawers, but it never stays. And I don’t remember going in afterward and messing things up, but without fail the next time I go into those boxes to find a cord, they’re all mixed up and a tangled mess.
I needed two HDMI cables this morning as I prepare for my Gentoo stream tomorrow night, and it took me a half hour to find them. Now I need to find a USB cable. That’s going to be fun and will likely take another hour, if not more. And in the meantime, the cables I go through will become even more tangled as I rummage around searching for what I need. The circle of life.
I would like to make this problem go away. Maybe use Ziploc bags to put like-to-like. Will I do that?
Of course, I won’t. Don’t be silly.
