Why Did I Save That?
So, a few days ago, I wrote about how my bookmarking system is a mess. I’m still thinking about what to do about that, but I’m still slowly going through my saved RSS articles, my bookmarks, and my notes. I’m weeding things out in the hopes that when I get a new system, I will have less to transfer over. Even if I end up sticking with what I have, not having so many saved things is the right thing to do.
But as I go through and do this, there have been so many utterances of “why did I save this”? Some of these mysteries are mundane: I just can’t remember why I found the saved thing interesting. Sometimes, though, I saved something that I would never have interest in, but saved it anyway. It’s very odd.
What it makes me know though, is that whatever system for bookmarking and saving for later that I come up with, it has to have some kind of memo system that comes along with it. Linkding kind of has this, there’s a description field, I could use that, but it’s often populated with content from the bookmark itself. I could build something that would save whatever it is to a file and attach a note to it. But I don’t know how useful something like that will be given that it would probably be outside the browser. I have no experience building a browser extension.
The next time I have to clear all this stuff out, I want to know why I saved those things. This guessing game is very frustrating. Anyone know of a save-it-later or bookmarking thing that is self-hosted, has browser integration, and has a memo feature? I know one of the big note taking suites probably has this (Obsidian clipper or whatever) but I really don’t want another desktop app to manage.
