Capitalize Your Letters
So, usually I don’t mock people for being creative. It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there with something you’ve made. I do it all the time, so I know how much doing so can actually cost you.
But today, I have to rant about something that’s going to come across as mean.
As you guys know, I’ve been taking part in Blaugust this year. It’s been fun, not only that it has kept me writing, but also that I’ve discovered so many blogs. I even subscribed to all of them.
I’ve been reading a ton of what y’all are putting out there, and so much of it is so very good. But there are a few blogs I’ve come across that I have a problem with. And I’m talking about the bloggers who write entire blog posts without a single capital letter.
I don’t get it. Do we not cover that in school anymore? I get not being able to spell or not having perfect grammar. I don’t spell things right all the time either. I have dyslexia and I have an aversion to editing my own content (I edit for a living, so doing it in my free time is a drag). But not capitalizing words that need to be capitalized?
Things like “I”. And I’m not talking about a typo. i’m talking about talking like this. i don’t understand why i can’t just capitalize that letter.
And it’s not just “I”. There are no capital letters anywhere. It’s like their shift key is broken. I just do not get it. 500 or 1000 words, all with very nice spelling, but no capital letters.
Is this like a generational thing? You’ve all been writing in SMS/iMessage for so long you no longer know that the beginning of each sentence and some nouns need to be capitalized? Or is it laziness? Or maybe, they’re doing it because they think its so cool.
I’m just not sure. And it pisses me off to the point I’ve unsubscribed from their RSS feeds. Maybe I get so triggered because I write for a living, and I spend so much of my time editing other people’s writing. Or maybe I’m an elitist. A grammar snob. Something. I don’t know.
Normally, I wouldn’t even say something about someone’s writing. I’m not a perfect writer myself, so expecting others to be perfect is not fair. But I’m just confused. Why is this a thing? If it were just one person, fine. But I’ve seen several. That’s a trend if I ever saw one.
So, what do you think? Why do people write that way? If you write that way, I’d love to give you a lesson on proper writing and capitalization.
This is day 9 of Blaugust 2025.
